There’s no denying that tattoos have steadily increased in popularity over time. Which also brought along a higher level of consistency and control within the market. Purchasing safe supplies and ink for tattooing has become easier as information about the importance of quality has become more prevalent. However, without true FDA approval or regulations, there is no way to guarantee that any tattoo supplies are completely safe. There have been recalls across the market for many pigments, leading the various manufacturers to voluntarily recall the reported products. From bacterial contamination to unsafe color additives, there are many factors that can warrant a recall for a pigment.
For this reason the FDA closely monitors problems from tattoos and permanent makeup, according to their official site. They do warn the FDA has not approved any inks for injection into your skin. There are no current regulations at this time. They also inform that there is more than 50 different pigments and shades in use. However, many are not approved for skin contact at all. Some are industrial grade colors that are suitable for printing ink and automobile paint, they explained. The FDA does not regulate practices in tattoo parlors, as that is the responsibility of state or local health departments.
Shouldering Responsibility
This leaves the responsibility of providing safe and clean products up to the manufacturers of tattoo pigments. Most importantly, it’s the responsibility of the artists choosing to purchase them. However, assuring that an artist is making the decision to use a high quality pigments becomes a major concern for most clients. Asking your artist questions and researching the manufactures is a key step to guaranteeing the best possible outcome. Leaving room for error can result in bacterial infections, allergic reactions, and even physical scarring within the tattoo. Understanding the risks and factors associated with getting tattooed is important for your protection. There’s no way to guarantee that any tattoo will apply or heal perfectly. However, taking crucial steps to prevent problems can make all the difference.
