How To Prepare For Your First Tattoo Appointment

When preparing for your first tattoo appointment, you may find yourself a little lost. But there’s no need to worry, that’s why we’re here to help! In this article we will cover some basic tips to help ease your nerves before your upcoming appointment.

Physical Preparations For Your Mind And Body

Taking time to properly prepare before your first tattoo appointment can make a big difference in your comfort levels. Some of our biggest recommendations to ease the tattoo procedure would be to:

~Eat a healthy meal before coming in on the day of your appointment.

~Try to stay hydrated for at least a week before the day of your appointment.

~Get a good nights rest the night before your appointment.

Ensuring that your body is in the best possible condition will help you, and your artist greatly during your tattoo appointment. Making sure you are fully nourished, hydrated, and rested will help to decrease your pain levels during the tattoo procedure. Being in a healthy state will also aid your skin during the healing process. Other potential problems to avoid would be partying/drinking alcohol, recreational drugs, and causing irritation to the skin. Tanning, shaving, chemical peels, etc. could all damage your skin and pose an issue. If there is significant damage, your artist may not be able to tattoo the desired area.

Choosing Proper Attire For Your Tattoo Appointment

Choosing proper attire for your appointment is a large factor in creating a comfortable environment for you, and your artist. Keep tattoo location choices in mind when selecting attire for your appointment. Wearing loose clothing, or attire that is easy to move away from the procedure area is always recommended. Avoid wearing nice clothing, or light colors, such as white or grey, to prevent against any unsightly ink staining during the procedure. Throughout the healing process, ink, lymph fluid, or plasma may soak into bedding, clothing, and other surfaces that remain in direct contact with the fresh tattoo. Plan accordingly!

Self-Entertainment

Throughout the duration of your tattoo appointment, it may be easier to sit more comfortably if you have a way to distract yourself. Some tools that won’t distract your artist during the tattoo procedure would be a smartphone, tablet, book, headphones, etc. Anything that can be used while still remaining calm and motionless throughout the tattoo procedure is usually acceptable.

The more you are able to prepare, the more your skin will thank you. If you have other questions on how to fully prepare for a tattoo, check out our Tattoo Pre-Care Guide here! If you still have unanswered concerns, please reach out to your artist directly for support.
