Everything You Need to Know About Tattoo Sleeves

Tattoos come in many different shapes, sizes, styles, colors, etc. There are so many ways, and more, to personalize your tattoo, including the entirety of your tattoos together. Many people cover their arms and legs in what are called tattoo sleeves.

Sleeve Sizes:

Nature Realism Half Sleeve

Sleeves come in different sizes. The first is the classic full sleeve. This means your tattoo design extends from your shoulder down to your wrist, and for many people, into the hand as well. These sleeves can be major projects and can take months to finish, especially depending on the style. A half sleeve covers half the arm. Either from the shoulder to the elbow, or the elbow to the wrist/hand. and will often be mixed with smaller, more random tattoos in the open space. Lastly, for arms, there is also the three-quarters sleeve. This extends from the shoulder to your middle forearm. They leave enough room to offer more skin visibility, which many people find to look very classy and put together.

Sleeve Genres:

Pop Culture Realism Leg Sleeve – DeadPool

The genre of a sleeve comes in many forms. Here are a couple of the more common sleeve themes. The first, becoming popular in recent years, is the patchwork-style sleeve. This is where the sleeve is a combination of smaller, more randomized tattoos that are all fit onto the arm or leg and flow well as the arm/leg gets covered over time. Another theme people will use for their sleeves is a nature sleeve. This could include forests, mountains, and lakes. These often include animal portraits or hints of wildlife in the nature scenes and have a nice, rough edge to them. Pop culture sleeves are also very popular. This could be a sleeve inspired by your favorite music artist, favorite video game, favorite artist/influencer, and so many more. This sleeve is very personalized, and it’s a nice showcase of who you are and what your interests are. Last, but not least, of the most popular tattoo sleeve styles is the memorial sleeve. These are sleeves dedicated to a loved family member, friend, or even pet. It’s a sweet way to remember and honor those whom you care about. There are so many different kinds of sleeves, not just the ones covered here. It’s completely up to you what you want and what it looks like.

Styles for Sleeves:

Illustrative Half Sleeve

The style of tattoo you choose in your sleeve is entirely up to you, no matter what genre sleeve you decide on. Popular styles include traditional style, realism, illustrative, neo-traditional, geometric, and Japanese. The traditional style tattoos are very bold tattoos with a limited color scheme to match when tattoos first started, before we had so many useful tools and inks, etc. Neo-trad, similarly, follows the same style but may add more details and a larger color palette. It is the “new gen” trad style tattoo. Illustrative style is what you may see a lot of floral sleeves in. It is nice linework, more artsy, and has a very natural flow vibe about it. Many whimsical tattoos or patchwork genre sleeves use this style. Realism is a classic for sleeves. This usually ends up being the memorial tattoos or nature tattoos. People and animal portraits or landscapes are often tattooed in the realistic style and have a very nice, mature look to them. Geometric style tattoos are used for a nice flow of the arm sleeves; these are often seen in patchwork sleeves and pop culture sleeves with flowing shapes or sometimes hard shapes to add nice depth to the sleeve. The Japanese style is a very popular style often featuring dragons, floral trees, and, many times, animals like tigers or snakes. It’s very unique and looks good on both the legs and arms, creating nice finished-looking pieces.

Choosing your sleeve style, genre, and size can be a daunting task. But there are so many ways to make it yours. So many styles to incorporate your personal vibe and encapsulate you as a person!
