Where the Least Painful Tattoo Locations Are
Pain levels for tattoos vary by the duration of the tattoo appointment, the placement of the tattoo, and your personal pain tolerance. How the tattoos affect you is a mix of your body and your mind.
Tattoo Placement:
The placement of your tattoo is the biggest factor in how painful or painless your tattoo will be. The reason tattoos hurt is because of the nerves in our bodies. Tattooing is ink being placed into our bodies via small needles, so tattoos technically can be called “open wounds”; thus, accidentally cutting your fingertip will hurt a lot less than cutting your finger’s joint. This is because tissue and muscle in our bodies protect the nerves, so in bonier areas tattoos tend to hurt more. So, the best placement for the most painless tattoos would be places like the forearm, the upper-outer thigh, the shoulder/upper arm, the calf, the upper back, behind the ear, and the upper hip.
Tattoo Duration:
Tattoos, even in the more painless areas, are not super comfortable. So, if you were to get a large tattoo, or one full of detail, then no matter where, the tattoo will become a little more tender as the appointment goes on. Many tattoo shops, including us here at Creative Ink, book longer appointments for tattoos to ensure they are done correctly. A tattoo appointment can range from 30 minutes to 8 hours or even more. As the appointment goes on, your tolerance will go down; you may get tired or dehydrated, etc., and this can cause you to be more sensitive to the needles and the position you are sitting in. So, for these types of appointments, be sure to bring snacks, drink water, and ask for breaks. This way it’s as painless and comfortable for you as possible!
Pain Tolerance:
Your own personal pain tolerance can affect how bad a tattoo hurts for you. If you know you have a high tolerance or have had tattoos in the past and know your limit, you may have a much easier time getting a tattoo compared to someone with a low pain tolerance. While this doesn’t change how placement can cause different pain levels, it can change how easily getting the tattoo is for you! Knowing yourself is the best way to determine if you can or can’t handle a tattoo!
