Tattoos: How to Keep Them Fresh and How They Age.
The best part of getting a tattoo is immediately after when you get to see the beauty after sitting through the pain. But did you know that tattoos spread and age along with your skin?
Immediately after a tattoo, the color is vibrant, dark and saturated as the inks were just freshly put in. The first year or the “early stages“ during the first year, it will look its sharpest and brightest as it is settled into your skin with strong, clear outlines. Oftentimes after a year, the tattoos give off a more natural subtle appearance as the skin is entirely healed.
As nice as it would be to have your tattoo remain perfect forever, it is in your skin and as many now the human body changes in ages, unlike a canvas. After about five years, most tattoos begin to lose their vibrancy and crisp lines soften. At this point, depending on the care you provided the tattoo, it may begin to blur.
After 10 years is when many people see the biggest changes. Most tattoos fade considerably and may stretch or distort as your body grows, shrinks or expands. Many see a loss of fine detail as skin cells constantly are dying and regenerating. Depending on the area you have had tattooed this level of fading may vary. This is why hand tattoos tend to fall out at a significantly faster rate.
Here are some things to keep into consideration to keep your tattoo, looking as nice as possible for as long as possible. Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of tattoo fading as the UV rays break down tattoo pigments. Many people notice a huge difference in the longevity of a tattoo when they use consistent skin care and UV protection/sunscreen.
Placement plays a huge factor as well, as stated before, hands, feet and ribs are more likely to show due to movement and skin regeneration while tattoos on your arms and thighs tend to hold it better.
The quality of your ink can also play into the aging. Professional artists use high-quality inks that are designed to last. If you had gotten your tattoo done unprofessionally, the artist may have not used the highest quality ink available, and this can show.
Along with the ink quality the style and colors you choose can help. There is a saying in the tattoo industry “bold hold” which is said often because it holds true. Choosing bolder lines and dark colors will hold up longer than fine lines, pastels and light colors.
Getting touchups on your tattoo is one of the best ways to keep your tattoo looking fresh. Many artists will rework a current tattoo you have and re-put lines in to keep it crisp.
Properly taking care of your tattoo with sun protection, consideration of what you’re getting/where, a good quality artist, and touchups is the best way to keep your ink looking the best I can as the years go by.
